Still Life

Everyday inanimate objects have been popular subjects of artists since ancient times.   Still life paintings give artists more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture.

The objects painted may be natural, such as flowers and plants, food and drink, or even rocks or shells.   Or they may be man-made, such as drinking cups or glasses, books, statues and vases, coins, and so on.

Even western hats and boots!
